Bikini choice tips

Choosing your competition bikini.

The competitor who takes the win does not always have the best body. Its important to perfect your finishing touches by having the knowledge to perfect the details needed to give you that necessary edge. In short, the women's categories are:

  • Female Bodybuilding
  • Female Fitness
  • Female Figure
  • Bikini Fitness

What "CUT" to choose?

Things to consider:

Which federation or organisation are you competing with? What are the rules and regulations

Each federation will have specific rules and regulations when it comes to the 'cut' and style of the bikinis and it is important that you know and follow.

What class are you competing in?

Each individual class will have specific criteria for the cut and style of the bikinis.

Choosing the right bikini for your body?

It is extremely important that you know the shape of your body and its strengths and weaknesses in order to accentuate your best attributes.

For instance, if you have a long torso and shorter legs, a high waisted cut would suit better to make the legs look longer. If you have a thicker waistline then I recommend a higher cut bikini, but keep the straps/connectors thin to draw attention away from this area.

If you are tall and not very curvy, then using a connector that is thick or dangly helps to create an illusion of curves.

Scars and tattoos are also worth taking into consideration when determine the best cut. Custom-made bikinis or suit can easily help minimizing the visibility of the scars or tattoo if they are located on the area that could be covered up.

Judges often eliminate competitors solely based on "imperfections", remember it is easier for judges to reduce down the winning line up by eliminating the flaws first as they have limited time. It's worth putting in the effort to perfecting seemingly minor details.

Here are a few pointers to help you avoid the common pitfalls other competitors face before you even set foot on the stage.

Find A Suit That Flatters You

There's no doubt that bodybuilding competition suits can be expensive, but this is one place where you should not cut corners especially when it comes to the fit of the bikini. It is better to find a reputable maker who specialises in competition suits and is familiar with the lines and cuts that accentuate your physique.

Most female competitors need to pay particular attention to the bottoms specifically bikini competitors who need the perfect-fitting bottom to accentuate the fullness and roundness of their glutes.

Months of hard work can be ruined by wearing the wrong suit.

Choosing your Suit Colour

Yes, suit colour matters! Your suit color selection should complement your overall look, specifically your skin tone and hair colour, as you will be tanned you need to consider this...take a look through holiday photos and see what colour outfit suits you with a tan.

Choosing your Suit Colour

Here are a few tips:

  • Red Hair: The warmer tones usually compliment red hair best. Consider browns, tans, greens, teals, red/orange tones and burgundies.
  • Blonde and platinum hair: Having this hair color offers the unique ability to wear gold or silver well. It also goes well with coral, hot pink, red, emerald, turquoise or aqua and blue tones.
  • Brown and black hair: In order to balance out the darkness on the top, those with dark hair will do best going with a medium to dark color bikini or posing suit. Tones of red, from lipstick to burgundy, royal blues and navies, plums and purples arel also be suitable.
  • Women with dark skin: Richer tones would work well for you such as reds and deep pinks. In addition, brights such as corals would also be very flattering. Blacks and browns would not be the best choice for you.
  • Please keep in mind, that these are only guidelines. If you are not comfortable wearing certain colours, do not choose it. Your preference and what makes you feel most confident on the day and this is most important.

TIP Go online... Take a look at recent bodybuilding competition pictures, and see what the top amateurs and pros are wearing. It's that simple. Also, don't be afraid to ask your suit maker for recommendations based on your features.

Remember, a knowledgeable suit maker is a valuable resource.

Crystals

The highest quality crystals will provide the best stage sparkle. Obviously, fewer crystals, a simple design and little customisation will keep the price more manageable for those who are budget conscious.

The price increases as the number of crystals and color of crystals increases and the designs become more intricate as application of the crystals is extremely labor intensive. There are options to have diamante connectors on the strap around the neck, on the hip on the bottoms, and across the strap at the back. These do bring a lot of sparkle to the stage, and the array of designs now are endless.

If your bikini is encrusted with stones, it is advised to keep the connectors simple rather than going to over the top.

We all want to sparkle on stage but too much bling can be overkill.

Common Errors: Buying a cheap suit - Shelling out half the cost for a cheaper bikini can cost you in the long run, I always say "buy cheap you end up buying twice" A bottom that is too large, a cheap bottom without the necessary curvature, or a suit cut the wrong way can make your glutes appear small and flat. TIP:If you want to present your physique in the best way possible, get the best suit possible.

My personal recommendation is Bikinis by Freydis who currently makes my bikinis and are totally clear of IFBB and UKBFF rules. Be careful not to get your bikini made like the pros as some fed will not allow this.

They're worth the money and have been worn by everyone ranging from amateur bodybuilders to top professional bikini competitors. Freydis can help you get the right cut, color, and connectors for your suit to fit your body.
